In an exciting new arm to the Spanish high-street retailer’s beauty venture, Zara has just revealed a range of everyday basic hair care products. To throw the excitement into overdrive, the products have been developed with one of the industry’s most innovative and most respected hair stylists – Guido Palau.

Since the early 90s, Palau made his mark on the world of fashion by taking traditional styles and giving them sculptural yet rebellious twists. His creative eye is highly sought after by designers and editors across the globe. Needless to say, Palau’s collaborations over the past 30 years have resulted in some of the world’s most iconic fashion imagery. In recent memory, we are all able to recall Adele’s voluminous mane on the cover of British Vogue. UK Vogue January 2020 : Taylor Swift by Craig McDean

It goes without saying that 2019 has been a remarkable year for Edward Enninful and in his continuing effort to propel British Vogue in a new direction (or in this case, a whole new decade), Enninful just dropped the magazine’s very first offering for 2020 starring Taylor Swift. The American singer/songwriter returns to the cover exactly two years after her last appearance morphing into Brigitte Bardot with a little help from beauty dream team Pat McGrath and Guido Palau. Enninful outfitted Swift in vintage Chanel for the cover image shot by photographer Craig McDean.

According to our forum members, the cover is a huge setback. “This is bad. I really like Taylor’s music and don’t have an issue with her on magazines generally, but this is AWFUL. The Photoshop makes her look like a different person. Never thought I’d say this, but this makes her U.S. Vogue September 2019 cover look like a masterpiece,” commented KINGofVERSAILLES.

“The amount of Photoshop and the wig-like hair makes it unlikable,” Srdjan chimed in.

“‘New decade, new style’ starts with Taylor and a Chanel suit? OK, I must be missing something. New style and a new decade should have started with a hot star, model or something less conventional than a successful white girl…” disapproved KissMiss.

LastNight wasn’t impressed, either. “The cover is horrible and so disappointing. I have to say I haven’t been a fan of McDean’s work for years and this is a real mess. Interesting that it’s a very similar color palette to Dua Lipa’s January 2019 cover: beige and red. I like Taylor, but nothing about this works for me.”

But not everyone hated the outcome. “So sick of her, but my god, this is easily the best cover she has done! The Bardot makeup actually works on her, especially with this styling,” raved Miss Dalloway.

“I like when Taylor goes Bardot — it’s perfect,” approved ghostwriter10549.

“Love it! I don’t think they Photoshopped Taylor, it’s the Bardot-esque styling and makeup. Way better than U.S. Vogue,” applauded Urban Stylin.

An unrecognizable Gigi did not go down lightly. “Why are they doing this to us? WHY? It’s sad enough that Meisel is doing only a few covers and the others are try-hard copies of his style but when his covers look like this,” slammed dcmaike.

“Hate it, she looks tacky and gaudy which was obviously intentional. Besides, wasn’t this done with Joan [Smalls] a few years ago? I don’t understand why she had to get cover billing when they don’t even give it to the greats,” Benn98 added.

Feeling the same way was Melancholybaby: “Awful attempt at imitating the 80s. The power of personality is enough to make a regular cover showstopping but alas Gigi possesses no such power.”

Aizanara wasn’t impressed either, ranting, “OMG this is so bad! The power of personality? This has no energy, no life and a black girl would have been 100x better. LMAO at the Photoshop, we all know Gigi doesn’t look like that in real life.”

“This is really bad, it’s such a shame,” echoed a disappointed KateTheGreatest.

“I really hope the skin tone is just the quality of that pic, because…” pointed out a dismayed Marc10.

Alexander McQueen is one show that’s always over the top, beauty included. To accompany the extraordinary embroidery and embellishment from Sarah Burton’s Spring 2016 collection, hairstylist Guido Palau created intricate updos using hair stitching. Yes, it’s exactly what you think: a needle and thread sewn throughout the hair to create the look. “We’re using Redken Windblown to give the hair some guts, and needle and thread,” he told Allure. “That’s it.”

image: Imaxtree

“[Designer] Sarah Burton wanted the hair to feel very natural and soft and feminine, but also artisanal, since a lot of the collection is based on artisanal workmanship,” he said. I wanted there to be interest when you looked at the models from the front, not just the back.” Invisible threads were carefully looped through strands, creating a gorgeous, wearable piece of hair art. “You know when you put something through a sewing machine and when you pull it, the thread ruches? That’s the idea we were going for.”

It seems like a pretty cool hair trend, but definitely one that you’ll need an extra set of hands with when replicating at home.
