Seventeen issues into her tenure as editor of British ELLE, and Kenya Hunt continues to steer the magazine in the right direction. Mayowa Nicholas, Rosemary Ferguson, Lashana Lynch and Naomi Campbell have been secured by Hunt as cover stars over recent months, and now it’s Margaret Qualley’s turn as a British ELLE cover girl with the unveiling of the April 2024 installment. The American actress and undisputed favorite of Chanel’s Virginie Viard (having posed in a handful of advertising campaigns for the fabled French fashion house and even walked the haute couture show – twice) poses for photographer Tom Schirmacher. You’re right to assume stylist Patricia Villirillo selected a look from Chanel’s Spring 2024 collection for Qualley to wear in the fresh and nonchalant cover image – complete with Margaret wearing the Chanel ballet flats she wed Jack Antonoff in.

“Margaret Qualley’s more recent magazine shoots seem to be selling a casual ‘I didn’t even brush my hair for this’ image. Not a fan of ‘not giving a f*ck’ covers. When things are low-effort, why should I care? I’d say French ELLE does it better, except her French ELLE cover was just the same,” voiced tigerrouge.

“She’s always styled the same in the most boring Chanel pieces,” chimed in gunsnroses.

Not everyone, however, was left so dissatisfied with the outcome. “I love how fresh and simple the cover is. I’ll always prefer a cover with the subject just being there and looking pretty. Instead of an over-emphasized art direction that tries to send a message or tell some story,” reasoned Srdjan.

“Much prefer this over last month’s Naomi Campbell cover! This feels more quintessential ELLE. Perhaps because this reminds me of something ELLE France is capable of, is the reason I’m so into this. All of this works for me – the fact its Margaret Qualley, the Chanel, the layout, the use of the pale green,” said vogue28.

There’s a certain roster of actresses who photograph just as well as models. Make no mistake Sienna Miller is definitely one of them. Over the years, the actress has demonstrated a knack for delivering stellar magazine covers fronting Allure, Porter, American Vogue, British Vogue, British Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire…the list is endless. She’s also a firm favorite of British ELLE with the glossy welcoming back the star of Netflix’s upcoming Anatomy of a Scandal for a third time this month three years after her last appearance. Captured by Tom Schirmacher and styled by Charles Varenne, Sienna smiles in the cover photograph looking effortlessly cool wearing a black leather jacket and jeans from Dolce & Gabbana.

But the majority of our forum members expected much more. “Beyond generic,” declared mikel.

Horizontina is also majorly underwhelmed: “Nobody’s heart seems to be here. Nobody’s brain either for that matter. Or maybe they went for laid-back and it came out lazy. Everything looks washed out, weak.”

“May not be the most groundbreaking of covers, but it’s Sienna Miller back on the cover of a fashion magazine so I’m sold. I can appreciate the clean American ELLE-adopted layout, the simplicity of it all and the Emmanuelle Alt-esque styling,” voiced vogue28.

LastNight is also a fan. “I actually like it. Sienna is always beautiful and it’s nice to see a big smile on the cover of a fashion magazine. It’s simple but very ELLE, it does the job for me!”

But very slowly but surely, British ELLE appears to be hearing our pleas for a return to the good old days. Following Rosie Huntington-Whiteley last month yet another fashion model graces the publication’s latest. Altyn Isabella Simpson is the mag’s May 2021 cover star fronting the issue wearing a tweed bodysuit from Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2021 collection in the joyous cover image snapped by Tom Schirmacher.

British ELLE‘s latest took our forum members by surprise. “Feels very throwback. I like it,” instantly approved mikel.

“I like it. Reminds me of vintage Chanel campaigns,” added THD96.

“Stunning cover, it’s a bit on the Emmanuelle Alt side, but I love it. And Altyn looks amazing. U.K. ELLE continues to win me over with each cover,” raved Benn98.

“Altyn looks gorgeous. Look at that smile! This cover could easily pass for a Vogue Paris one! Well done ELLE U.K.,” Valentine27 chimed in.

FashionMuseDior shared the same sentiment: “Very Vogue Paris indeed.”
