Subsequent to joining Gucci as creative director in early 2023, Sabato De Sarno has been unable to catch a break. Under the Italian designer’s direction (in addition to declining sales), the luxury Italian fashion house’s advertising campaign imagery has seen better days. Not even campaigns lensed by David Sims and Mario Sorrenti (often starring a bevy of fresh-faced talents) have sufficed. Umpteen campaigns later, there are zero signs of improvement with chapter one of the Gucci Gift 2024 campaign for the festive holiday season ahead. In an attempt to generate buzz, De Sarno brought back Kendall Jenner as the face of Gucci, who is joined by Jessica Chastain, Hiandra Martínez, Lineisy Montero, and Ni Ni. The cast poses for Anthony Seklaoui, with the campaign opening up in a tribute to The Savoy in London (a nod to the hotel where founder Guccio Gucci worked as a porter).

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Tragic! Kendall Jenner for Gucci is so LAME. Don’t get me started on the artistic direction which is giving mid-range US department store. And Kering wonders why their brand keeps sinking,” Frederic01 voiced.

“Gucci believe they’re at a luxury level, but they’re so hungry for those seasonal profits, they’re willing to advertise on the level of Kate Spade or Michael Kors,” tigerrouge chimed in.

Yasouss stated: “I’ve seen better holiday ads from Tommy Hilfiger!”

“The setting looks really cheap,” noted forum member MDNA.

Hchloe wasn’t best impressed either. “God this is so depressing,” they shared.

“This is wrong. So, so wrong,” GivenchyHomme exclaimed.

“This campaign shows an astonishing lack of creativity. It feels so uninspired that even a department store would pass on it,” shrieked ah ah.

The photographic duo Luigi & Iango have a strong tendency to deliver the goods when it comes to producing spectacular covers for our favorite fashion glossies. Take for example this month alone, for which we have witnessed the terrific twosome capture fabulous September covers for both Vogue Korea and Vogue Netherlands.
Thankfully for us here at theFashionSpot, Vogue Hong Kong receives the memo loud and clear and becomes the latest glossy to commission Luigi & Iango, bestowing upon us a magnificent model extravaganza for September 2023. Selena Forrest, Cara Taylor, Abby Champion, Qun Ye and Lineisy Montero each come together for the celebratory occasion, decked out in head-to-toe looks from Kim Jones’ Fendi Fall 2023 collection, highlighted with jewelry from Messika. Complete with styling from Michael Philouze, the girls huddle together in the two immaculate and chic group covers (below) while also posing separately on five flawless and unique solo covers.

As one can expect, members of our forums were ecstatic with the outcome. “Obsessed,” declared Riseup.
“Simple, effective, looks stunning!” raved zippyo.
“LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE : this is the result I wanted from American Vogue with the supermodels. WOW! The lighting, retouching, styling, the background color, the models, the poses – yessssssss! I love the whole vibe, it takes me back to the old Vogue Japan,” Bertrando3 enthused.
Zorka said: “Dear Anna [Wintour] and Edward [Enninful], watch and LEARN!”
Sharing the same level of enthusiasm was vogue28: “It all just feels so celebratory for a month like September that I cannot help but to instantly fall in love with all of this – ALL of it! Not crazy about the model choices but I am absolutely here for Abby Champion who looks gorgeous and I love how monochromatic the covers themselves are. The composition, as per usual, is always top notch from Luigi & Iango!”
“Love love loveeeee Lineisy, she looks GREAT! So does Cara, and to be honest all the other girls as well,” chimed in a just as elated ihhbl.

Once again the red carpet looks at MTV’s Video Music Awards were pretty tame, minus a snake here and there. Stars like Taylor Swift, Lizzo and Normani brought the sparkle, while Alison Brie, Hailee Steinfeld and Halsey played a little peekaboo. There were also plenty of models at the ceremony, some of them decked out in Fashion Trailblazer Award recipient Marc Jacobs’ most iconic designs.

Here are the most notable looks of the night.

Miuccia Prada ditched Steven Meisel as Prada’s campaign photographer back in 2016 — and our forum members are still not over it. Meisel’s replacement has been Belgian lensman Willy Vanderperre, who’s been capturing Prada’s collections for the past two years and, while some hit the spot, most have been pretty disappointing (see the Pre-Fall 2018 and Fall 2018 campaigns). Vanderperre now returns for the recently unveiled Resort 2019 spot starring models Sora Choi, Freja Beha Erichsen, Maaike Inga Felderhoff, Lineisy Montero, Julia Nobis and Anok Yai, captured in a psychedelic studio setting.

For the majority of our forum members, the campaign was just more of the same. “Cool but lifeless. In general, Willy’s Prada campaigns just fail to move me. Wish they could just go back to Meisel,” said Ed. “I like Willi’s aesthetic but not for Prada, that’s the difference between him and Meisel. Meisel works for many brands and makes very different campaigns. Willy does the same for all the brands and editorials. Bring Steven back!!” protested zacatecas570. “I think what I miss the most from the Meisel era is the versatility in terms of interpreting the Prada aesthetic. Meisel campaigns were different from seasons to seasons and offered a different range of models,” Lola701 chimed in.

“I like the setting but that’s it. With Willy being a one-trick pony, people seem to take what they can get from Prada. The bar is on the floor,” said Malaya. Yet not everyone was disappointed. “Beyoooond! This and the Fall campaign have been by FAR the best ones Willy has produced for the brand. Perfect for a Resort campaign, vibrant, straightforward, psychedelic and desirable. Bravo Miuccia and the team,” applauded Riseup. GivenchyHomme felt the same way. “Straight, simple, and to the point. I’m very impressed. It’s quite fun and colorful, it feels more Prada than anything he’s shot so far. I wish they were smiling in some of these. Beggars can’t be choosers I suppose,” he commented.

Christian Dior F/W 2018.19 by Pamela Hanson

Ever since Maria Grazia Chiuri become the creative director of Christian Dior back in 2016, our forum members have fallen out of love with the Italian designer — especially when it comes to botching up Dior’s advertising campaigns. Following a solo Sasha Pivovarova last season, Maria’s back in the mood for multi-girl casting for Fall 2018. Lineisy Montero, Ruth Bell, Asya Reznikova and Evelyn Nagy star in the campaign inspired by both the student protests of the 1960s and French New Wave movies. The foursome took to the streets of Paris for the series of cinematic images, photographed by Pamela Hanson (who quietly replaces Patrick Demarchelier, obvi) and styled by Karl Templer throughout.

Per usual upon the campaign’s release, our forum members weren’t all too fond of the outcome. “Even Zara is better than this…” Lola701 said straight away.

“Who are these people? They have got to be kidding me with this c-list cast and campaign. Can’t believe this is coming from Dior,” expressed anlabe32.

“LMAO truly awful. Who is the creative director of this campaign? Child, that VLC Media Player subtitle is atrocious!” mocked an underwhelmed Ed.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

Rigida felt the same way: “This is such a fail. I feel that the campaign will be better without the subtitles gimmick. Gucci did it first and better.”

Also left far from impressed was forum member Vitamine W: “Chanel’s lookbook photography, a failed attempt at Gucci humor fronted by a Prada face who can’t emote her way out of a paper bag. The Dior Brand marketing team might just be the vapidest of all of them. Shameful!”

“How the hell the let even let this happen? Well, since her originality lacks in design, now it bleeds through the campaigns. Seriously, even Zara would have ditched the idea because Gucci did it first and people still remember it,” TaylorBinque commented.

“I can’t believe grown up women buy into this nonsense,” voiced forum member 333101. “It’s like she sourced inspiration from angsty 16-year-old’s Tumblr pages, and the campaign itself is dull beyond words!”

While there were gorgeous gowns aplenty at last night’s CFDA Fashion Awards, suits were trending in a major way. From conventional tuxes with a touch of sparkle to deconstructed versions showing a lot of skin, numerous attendees suited up for the ceremony. There was also quite a bit of color at the annual awards. Gigi Hadid practically supplied every shade imaginable in her bold Versace ensemble. But we also saw lots of reds, blues, greens, pinks and yellows outside of her outfit. A handful of stars opted for black but those looks came with little details like embellishments, pops of pinstripes, lace and lace-up detailing to ensure they were anything but basic.

See who won awards below and see who came out on top on the fashion front in the slideshow above.

Alberta Ferretti tapped Steven Meisel to capture the Spring 2017 campaign last season but opted to hire photographer Tim Walker for Fall 2017. Switching things up even more, the Italian fashion label ditched the likes of Irina Shayk and Vittoria Ceretti for Lexi Boling, Kiki Willems and Lineisy Montero. Sticking with the same studio setting, the trio of models makes magic, with a little help from Carine Roitfeld’s styling.

Despite the lack of Meisel, our forum members seemed perfectly satisfied with the outcome. “Well this is an interesting approach for Alberta Ferretti. I like it, it’s Tim Walker without being typical Tim Walker. Plus, Carine’s styling enhances the images,” commented dodencebt.

“This is fantastic, Tim at his best, the mood, the styling, the cast, superb,” cheered Riseup.

“What a gorgeous campaign! So visually appealing,” said an impressed Handbag Queen.

One model, in particular, seemed to steal the spotlight. “Clearly, Kiki is the star of the campaign,” enthused forum member ash92.

“Kiki slays. Also love Lexi’s shot in the yellow coat and hat. Lovely photographs,” anlabe32 approved.

Mathiaskatz couldn’t have agreed more. “Kiki steals the show for me,” he echoed in agreement.

“I love the campaign. The casting is great and the models blend in perfectly, the mood is really interesting and unexpected and the clothes look great, better than on the runway in my opinion,” confessed apple.

T-minus-two months to go until Edward Enninful takes the reigns at British Vogue, and in the meantime, the W creative and fashion director is keeping busy. Most recently, the Ghanaian-born fashion editor donned his G-A-P-emblazoned director’s cap for a certain American heritage brand. The industry icon cast, styled and directed Gap’s newest ad, an homage to the eternal wardrobe staple that is the basic white tee.

Gap is well aware that its classic 90s pieces have reentered the spotlight, albeit with a 2017 twist. In the ad, dubbed “Bridging the Gap,” a diverse cast of individuals shows how they wear their plain white topper whilst singing along to Boney M.’s “Sunny” and dancing to the beat of their own proverbial drum.

Diversity Report: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back for Spring 2017 Ads ]

“I love the optimistic American style that Gap celebrates and the simplicity of the basic white T-shirt that allows you to be yourself,” said Enninful of the project. “Growing up, I loved the imagery I saw from America as it celebrated being the land of the free and home of the brave. This project is about authenticity and people living their truths.”

Per usual, Enninful put on his people. The cast includes many a frequent Enninful collaborator, along with others he admires and champions. The ad stars actresses Priyanka Chopra and Yara Shahidi, rapper Wiz Khalifa, champion fencer Miles Chamley-Watson, model and actress Christie Brinkley, Broadway star Jonathan Groff and models Alek Wek, Maria Borges, Adwoa Aboah, Ellen Rosa, Fernanda Ly, Jasmine Sanders, Lineisy Montero and Casil McArthur.

“It takes a lot of courage to be the person you want to be. I am ‘Bridging the Gap’ by living my truth. I am not going to hide myself from the world,” affirmed McArthur, one of the four transgender models to walk in Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2017 show.

It’s important to note that, while the ad features models of various ages, races and gender identities, it fails to deliver on the size diversity front. Still, “Bridging the Gap” is a strong effort from two longtime diversity champs.
